Child Trends Appoints Four New Board Members

WASHINGTON, DC—The Board of Directors of Child Trends today announced the appointment of four new directors to its Board, which occurred at its meeting on December 1, 2010. 

 

“The staff and current board of Child Trends are happy to welcome our newest board members who have a variety of skills and talents that will help us further our mission of using research to improve outcomes for children, youth and families.  Our new members have deep expertise in nonprofit management, strategic communications, and children’s issues,” said Jack Leone, chair of Child Trends Board of Directors.

New members include:

Leonard D. Burton is the chief operating officer of the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, which supports community-based efforts to create opportunities and build assets for youth leaving foster care.  Prior to working for the Initiative, Mr. Burton held several senior management and leadership positions with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services (DCS), including serving as Assistant Commissioner of Child Welfare and Regional Field Services.   

Dan Cardinali is the president of Communities In Schools, a dropout prevention program working to support children in more than 3,400 schools in 25 states and the District of Columbia.  Cardinali is a Trustee for America’s Promise Alliance and is a 2007 Annie E. Casey Children and Families Fellow. He serves as vice chairman of the board of directors of the National Human Services Assembly and the National Collaboration for Youth. 

 

Lisa Karlisch is an engagement consultant for Real Change Strategies of McLean, VA, and a management consultant for Buchanan & Edwards of Alexandria, VA.  She also worked as an engagement manager at McKinsey and Company and was director of operations for the Center for Multicultural Human Services. Karlisch will serve as the new treasurer.

 

Gregory Niblett is the senior vice president of AED’s Social Change Group, where he plans and oversees projects involving policy development, NGO strengthening, health, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, environment, youth development, economic development, and democracy and civil society.  Prior to joining AED, Mr. Niblett was the deputy assistant administrator of USAID’s Bureau of Food and Humanitarian Assistance. 

 

“We are delighted to be joined by such outstanding leaders in the social welfare field who care passionately about children and the importance of using good information to improve their outcomes,” Child Trends President Carol Emig said. 

 

Child Trends also bid farewell to three retiring board members:  Alan LeBovidge, former vice chairman, Taxes for Coopers and Lybrand and past director of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue; Christine Kelley Cimko, of Cimko Strategies, LLC; and David Goslin, former president & CEO, American Institutes for Research.  Their outstanding service was honored at the December 1 meeting.
