Thank you for your interest in our study. Are you raising grandchildren or the child of a relative or friend? With your help, we hope to learn how we can improve services for caregivers just like you!
Child Trends is a nonprofit research organization committed to improving the lives of children and families. We conduct research to better understand and improve the services and policies that impact children and families’ lives. We are partnering with an organization called HALOS to evaluate the kinship navigator services they provide to caregivers in the Charleston, South Carolina area.

We understand that caring for and raising children, while rewarding, can also be stressful. To better support caregivers, we will investigate the degree to which the services provided by HALOS support kinship caregivers and their children. To learn more about how HALOS helps caregivers, we’ll compare the outcomes (e.g., parenting practices, economic and housing stability, family functioning) of caregivers who are enrolled in the HALOS program with caregivers who are not.
As a research participant, you have rights that you should be fully aware of.
We are looking for people who live in counties that do not yet have HALOS services to join our study. Your time and participation are key to the success of our project! If you are eligible for the study, we will ask you to complete three surveys over the next six months. The surveys will ask about your family, the resources you have or need to be a caregiver, and your feelings about being a kinship caregiver. For each survey that you complete, we will send you a $30 gift card in the mail, for a total of $90.
If you would like to be in our study, please contact Rebecca Carrell at rebecca@charlestonhalos.org or (843) 974-3860 between 8:00am and 5:00 pm EST to express your interest and learn more about the study.
