Hispanic Center, Child Trends submit comment on proposed replacement of Flores settlement

Child Trends and the National Research Center on Hispanic Children & Families responded to a request for public comment on new rules proposed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Our joint comment recommends withdrawal of the agencies’ proposal to amend current regulations regarding the apprehension, processing, care, custody, and release of unauthorized immigrant minors in custody. We also recommend the use of alternatives to detention that carry less hazardous implications, but would still meet the departments’ shared goal of keeping families intact. The comment reflects our commitment to inform policies that improve the lives of Hispanic children and their families.
