Media advisory: School safety expert Deborah Temkin to testify to Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee

At 9:30 a.m. ET tomorrow, July 25, 2019, Child Trends education and school safety expert Dr. Deborah Temkin will deliver testimony about enhancing school safety against targeted violence to the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

The purpose of the hearing is to provide the public with an understanding of the current state of school safety, school violence mitigation, and prevention best practices. In her testimony, Dr. Temkin will detail current knowledge of evidence-based best practices for preventing school violence, the potential effects of “school hardening” efforts (e.g., increased law enforcement and security technology presence) on school communities, and the need for investment in research on—and implementation of—school safety strategies.

Dr. Temkin is a leading researcher on policies and programs that support the health, safety, and learning of entire school communities (students, teachers, and outside communities). Her research focuses on preventing school-based violence through the creation of positive school environments.
