Sam Abbott, MPP, is a senior research analyst in the child welfare research area at Child Trends. He currently works with the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, providing database management, assisting in evaluation trainings, and conducting data analysis. After completing his graduate studies, Mr. Abbott was a researcher and consultant at the Georgetown University Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, where his focus was on the population of young people with child welfare experience who cross over into the juvenile justice system. His research interests include youth involved in multiple systems of care, the causes and corollaries of system crossover, and the factors that contribute to a successful transition to adulthood after foster care involvement. Most of his time is dedicated to child welfare projects related to young people transitioning or aging out of foster care. As part of these projects, he analyzes program, state, and national data to explore how outcomes interplay with the policy and practice environment for this population.
