Emily Cantrell is a research assistant in early childhood development at Child Trends. She is interested in the relationship between early childhood development and socioeconomic inequality. Emily’s undergraduate senior research project at Denison University analyzed local data to determine whether Newark, Ohio’s early childhood education and care programs have been successful in reducing socioeconomic inequality in kindergarten literacy. The project received the college’s first place Gordon Prize in Economic Research. In addition to her research experience, Emily has worked with young people from preschool through high school, in a variety of educational settings, including programs in Costa Rica and Peru. Emily holds a BA in human development and social policy.
