Alexis Lessans is an intern on the education research team. She is currently a doctorate student in special education at the George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Prior to joining Child Trends, Alexis taught elementary and secondary special education in Virginia, Florida, and Maryland. The majority of her teaching experience took place in self-contained special education classrooms in low-income schools, which inspired her to pursue her doctorate in special education. Alexis is primarily interested in how childhood trauma impacts student achievement and the identification of students for special education services. She received her MEd in early childhood and special education and her BS in applied developmental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Education.
