 OVERVIEW

This program was developed to teach moderately to severely depressed students skills and strategies to help them cope with their depression. Two experimental studies have found that adolescents who receive the Coping with Depression program are more likely to experience improvement in depression symptoms and/or diagnoses compared to adolescents in a control group.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM

Target population: Moderately to severely depressed adolescent middle and high school students

The Coping with Depression (CWD) is a series of lessons intended to familiarize students with specific skills and strategies to deal with problems related to depression such as constructive thinking, self-reinforcement, and social skills. Additionally, communication, negotiation and problem solving skills are emphasized. Participants receive workbooks that include reading materials, quizzes, and homework assignments.

Evaluated population: Fifty-nine depressed youth (mean age was approximately 16 years old) were evaluated.

Approach: This evaluation compared cognitive-behavioral therapy to cognitive-behavioral therapy plus parent training (i.e., instructing the parents on what the youth learn in order to promote acceptance and understanding) and a wait-list control.  The participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups.  Self-report data were collected on depression, anxiety, pleasant activities, and depressogenic cognitions (dysfunctional thoughts that are related to depression), and parent-report data were collected on externalizing and internalizing behavior and depression. Follow-up data was collected for the treatment groups at 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment.

Results: Results show that both treatment groups performed better on depression measures than the wait-list control group, though no differences were found between the two treatments.  There were no differences between groups on anxiety, pleasant activities, or depressogenic cognitions.
