to Promote Prosocial Behaviors: Employ Authoritative Parenting Style |
For example, an observational study of 112 6- to 11-year-olds found that children who experienced authoritative parenting (i.e. warm, supportive and strict) tended to behave more prosocially than youth who experienced other styles of parenting (Dekovic & Janssens, 1992). Similarly, a cross-sectional study of 78 students in the sixth and seventh grade found that parents who used inductive discipline (i.e., reasoning and parental disappointment) as opposed to power assertion had children who were prosocial (Krevans & Gibbs, 1996). |
