Gavin & Furman's (1996) cross-sectional study of adolescent girls and their best female friends identified the following characteristics as those which appear to promote harmonious relationships: socioemotional support, displays of affection, appropriate power-sharing, and similar emotional needs (Gavin & Furman, 1996).
