"Best Bets" to Promote Quality Non-Family Adult Relationships:
Promote Certain Qualities in Mentoring Programs

Some studies have, however, suggested certain characteristics, which may optimize non-related adult, mentoring relationships. For example, these unions are most successful when mentors establish set meeting times, have access to reliable transportation, are given supervision and training before and after the initiation of the relationship, and are responsive to the mentee's input and changing needs. Furthermore, participation in social activities together and mentor-mentee matching based on similar interests appear to encourage closer and more supportive relationships. More detailed information about these studies can be found in Jekielek, Moore, & Hair (2002).
