Drawing from research conducted by Sroufe (1983), Hutt (1966), Vygotsky (1978), and Sigel (1982), Rubin and Rose-Krasnor (1992) concluded that the competent parent will guide and nurture the child's independent problem-solving, and encourage the acquisition of new and challenging social skills.
