Hightower's (1990) longitudinal findings show that children who grew up with authoritative parents--- those who balance the enforcement of rules with responsive and encouraging parenting--- had more positive reports of mental health in later life. Mental health has been identified as a quality which facilitates establishing and maintaining social relationships (Hightower, 1990).
