"Best Bets" to Promote Empathy and Sympathy:
Encourage Religiosity

Results of a cross-sectional study examining the effects of religiosity on empathy development found that levels of religiosity, especially among late adolescents, were positively associated with levels of adolescent empathy. The sample consisted of 569 Western, rural high-schoolers from a predominately middle class background (Francis & Pearson, 1987).
