| "Best Bets" for Increasing Educational Expectations: Promote Smaller Families |

Two additional characteristics of adolescents' families, the number of siblings adolescents have and the number of generations of family members that have been born in the United States, have also been shown to predict adolescents' educational expectations. Goyette and Xie (1999) found that Asian American and White adolescents who had fewer siblings expected to complete a greater number of years of schooling and were more likely to expect to attend college than adolescents with fewer siblings.
