The motivation behind performing acts of positive citizenship has been found to be related to performing the act, net of other background characteristics such as family and individual processes. Unfortunately, the research on adolescents is sparse. Findings of studies on the motivations of adults to be involved in community service suggest that there different types of motivations depending on the task. For environmentalism, two types of motivations have been conceptualized (Thompson & Barton, 1994): anthropocentrics, who are characterized by their support of environmental conservation for the reason that human comfort, quality of life, and health can be dependent on the preservation of natural resources and a healthy ecosystem; and ecocentrics, who support environmental issues because they see nature as worthwhile, in and of itself, regardless of economic or lifestyle implications. Thompson & Barton (1994) found that ecocentrics are more environmentally conscious than anthropocentrics. |
