"Best Bets" " to Increase Political Involvement: Increase Political Knowledge

Having volunteer service as a component of a program is one strategy for promoting positive citizenship, but there is a current push to integrate community service into the curriculum in schools. Called service-learning programs, these strategies couple classroom teachings of civics and community responsibility with required community service in the form of political and non-political participation. The American Political Science Association (APSA), in particular, has become very involved in this endeavor to instill civics in this country's youth (see APSA's website for further details http://www.apsanet.org) and Senator Paul Wellstone has sponsored the Hubert Humphrey bill for service learning, a funding mechanism that would distribute millions of dollars to service learning programs and research if it were passed.
