| Postponing Sexual Involvement, Human Sexuality and Health Screening Curriculum is a school-based program for 7th and 8th grade students. The goal of this two-year abstinence-focused program is to postpone sexual involvement. Among sexually experienced youth, this program promotes reducing sexual activity first and then encouraging contraceptive use. The program includes 3 sessions on reproductive health issues, the 5-session PSI curriculum that was developed in Atlanta for a school-based program, a health risk assessment questionnaire, individual interviews with high risk students, and a variety of educational activities. Each of the 8 program session lasts 45 minutes. The program was implemented in 6 schools in Washington, DC. Program costs include $500 plus travel expenses for a trainer and $149 for the PSI curriculum, as well as $200 for training team leaders and $13 for Teen Leader Survival guides. An experimental evaluation of Postponing Sexual Involvement, Human Sexuality and Health Screening Curriculum found that female participants were more likely to be virgins and to use contraception at last sex compared to females in the control group. While program group males had higher knowledge levels and more positive attitudes about postponing childbearing, the program showed no impact on virginity status or contraceptive use among males. |
