The Youth AIDS Prevention Project (YAPP) is a school-based HIV/AIDS education program designed for 7th grade students. The program was implemented in the Chicago area in 15 school districts. A total of 11 schools participated in the implementation while 6 schools served as the control group. There were two groups receiving the YAPP intervention. Both groups received the school-based component, and one group had an additional parent involvement component. YAPP's primary goal is to prevent STDs, HIV and AIDS, and substance abuse. The program is conducted over a two-year period with 10 50-minute classes offered across 2 weeks in the first year and 5 classes during the second year. The parent involvement intervention had students complete homework assignments with a parent, and requested that at least one parent attend a parent workshop. A PASHA kit is available for this program for $590. An experimental evaluation conducted immediately after completion of the 2-year program found that program participants were more likely to report using condoms with foam and were marginally less likely to report recent sexual activity. However, there were no differences between participants and the control group on using condoms only or on the number of recent sexual partners. One year after the end of the intervention, there were no differences between groups on sexual activity or condom use. |
