Programs with Mixed Reviews for Limiting the Number of Sexual Partners:
HIV Education Programs

Becoming a Responsible Teen is an eight-session program for African American teens between the ages of 14 and 18 who are either attending school or who have dropped out of school. Becoming a Responsible Teen is a community-based program designed to help teens to understand information about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention. The program was implemented in an urban Southern area. Program costs include $8,000 to train 20-50 staff members to implement Becoming a Responsible Teen, $60 per trainee for curriculum and training materials, and stipends for teens, who receive $5 for each hour of participation. An experimental evaluation found that male and female participants in the experimental program were more likely to use condoms immediately after the intervention, and female participants were more likely to use condoms one year after the intervention. Program participants who were virgins were less likely to become sexually experienced than the control group and sexually experienced participants had lower levels of sexual activity one year after the intervention than the control group.
