Be Proud! Be Responsible! is a community-based AIDS risk reduction program for African American males in the tenth through twelfth grades. The program also targets out-of-school male youth by recruiting patients from a local clinic and teens who were involved in a local YMCA. Be Proud! Be Responsible! focuses on increasing HIV/AIDS knowledge in order to increase motivations to practice safe sex and reduce sexual risk-taking behaviors. The intervention is administered in a 5-hour session on a Saturday morning in a small-group setting, led by a trained facilitator. The evaluation is based in an inner-city Philadelphia school. Be Proud! Be Responsible! emphasizes both abstinence among sexually inexperienced youth and the importance of condom use among teens who are sexually active. The program addresses attitudes towards abstinence and condom use and includes skill-building exercises to promote abstinence and condom use. Program costs include training group leaders ($8,000), training materials and curriculum ($250 per trainee), and stipends ($40 per participant). An experimental evaluation of Be Proud! Be Responsible! found that participants reported having fewer days of sexual intercourse, fewer sexual partners, and a greater use of condoms and a lower incidence of anal intercourse than the control group at the 3-month follow-up. |
