In comparison to control group:

- Program participants had higher test scores for reading and math soon after the summer program ended; no impact was found on standardized scores in long-term report.

- Program participants received higher mean scores on tests of word recognition, reading passages and spelling.

- Program participants experienced greater gains over time in word recognition, reading passages, and spelling mean test scores.

Best bets for improving test scores:

- Strongly academic-focused after-school programs providing homework assistance, recreational, tutoring, sports, and cultural activities and trips.
