Mission/Goals: Girltime is a youth development and early intervention program designed to reduce teen pregnancy through health education, academic and cultural enrichment, community service, self-esteem building, and case-management.

Notes: The Community Wellness Center runs two additional programs, Puentes and Peer Health Education. Puentes in a support group for teen moms that provides parenting skills and educational support. Working with the schools in Toas, the Peer Health Education program helps bring age-appropriate health education to schools through peer educators.

The Community Wellness Center served 426 youth in 2003-2004 and there were 20 girls in the Girltime program. Girls ages 10-14 Please click here for more information on this evaluation.

Type of Evaluation: Outcomes Monitoring

Objective: To determine whether Girltime reaches its intended audience and whether the participants indicated positive changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

Impact/Outcomes: Between the pre-test and the post-test, more Girltime participants reported having exposure to health topics, sleeping 7 hours or more, being able to deal with pressure, and increased educational aspirations. Participants were less likely to engage in risky behaviors than their friends. The average participant thought she would have her first child between 24 and 25 years of age and almost all girls knew what to expect when they first got their period. Because there was no comparison group, it is not known whether the positive changes in the girls behavior, knowledge, and attitudes were due to participation in the Girltime program.

No fee.
