Mission/Goals: The Court Youth Center offers an art-focused after
school program where students learn about the performing, visual, literary
and culinary arts, and particularly targets at-risk children, children
from low-income families, and children not performing at grade level. It
aims to nurture the natural talents of youth so that they can become
productive, healthy, creative citizens. The Center focuses on increasing
children's 'creative learning process, academic performance, problem
solving and group interaction skills in order to internalize responsible
decision making, to gain a sense of community and to incorporate the
creative learning process in all aspects of their lives.'
Notes: The Court Youth Center recently expanded to include a
charter school in August 2004. It has received national and local
recognition, including being named one of six exemplary after-school
programs in arts from the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S.
Department of Education; a Coming Up Taller finalist from the President’s
Committee on Arts and Humanities; one of five outstanding programs from
the New Mexico Community Foundation and Outstanding Recreation Program
from the NM Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Some
funding for the after-school comes from the 21st Century Learning Center
program.
