Mission/Goals: The Institute provides academic tutoring, experiential learning, and membership to at-risk students, targeting mental, physical, and spiritual development.

Notes: Modals of instruction for the Learning to Lead program include rock climbing, mountain biking, wilderness travel, high ropes course initiatives, group problem solving, environmental stewardship, and service learning experiences.

There are 60 students in the Learning to Lead Program Ages 11-17

Sample: There are 60 participants in the Learning to Lead program. The students are approximately 90% Hispanic, 8% white, and 2% black or Native American.

Methodology: Pre- and post-test surveys were administered to participants at the beginning and end of the academic quarter.

Outcomes Examined: Academic achievement and behavioral outcomes.

Measurement Instruments: Report cards; Standardized test scores in Reading and Math; Rubric of Student Success (teacher report); school attendance and dropout data; school incident reports and referrals; and student surveys (Locus of Control & Resiliency).

Impact/Outcome Findings: The is the first time that Cornstalk Institute conducted the evaluation described above. Outcome findings will be available in January of 2005.
