Type of Evaluation: Quasi-Experimental.

Objective: To examine the influence of service-learning work on student outcomes.

Impact/Outcome Findings: Several indicators of student engagement were higher for NID students than for the comparison group. Fourth graders had higher average ratings on civic responsibility than the comparison group, but there was no difference between groups in sixth and eighth grades. One personal/social development indicator was higher for fourth graders than the comparison group, but the rest were not significantly different. Only two indicators were more positive for comparison groups. Analyses of achievement test results were mixed.
