Mission/Goals: The Oakland Youth Chorus provides a cross-cultural music education and performance program for youth, fostering talent, confidence, and community. The OYC's Music In the Schools programs feature Music of Our World instrumental programs in elementary and middle schools and Miracle Choruses for elementary school singers. Students learn and perform a fun and challenging repertoire of multicultural music with OYC's faculty of professional educators and performing musicians.

Type of Evaluation: Outcomes Monitoring.

Objective: The Oakland Fund for Children and Youth (OFCY) evaluation was designed to assess service provision and the effects of services provided by organizations that received grants from OFCY. Please note that the following summary focuses on evaluation findings regarding the effects on children, rather than on service provision.

Impact/Outcomes: Child-reported satisfaction with services declined slightly between fall 2003 and spring 2004 (83.4% versus 81.9%), while parent satisfaction increased very slightly (89.9% versus 90.8%). The percentages of children and parents reporting improvement across the seven developmental assets increased somewhat between the fall and spring (61.9% and 63.1% for children and 50.8% to 67.3% for parents), but the percentages decreased slightly for staff ratings (82.2% to 80.9%). Similarly, the percentages of children and parents reporting child improvements across the five areas of attitudes, skills, knowledge, and behaviors increased (64.6% to 67.1% for youth reports and 67.6% to 78.0% for parent reports), but the percentages decreased according to staff ratings (89.5% to 82.9%). Staff ratings of children's expectations of themselves increased (57.5% to 73.0%) as did their ratings of children's participation in home, school, and community (52.9% to 75.5%). 87% of youth improved their school attendance by more than the average improvement of OUSD students; 67% improved their GPA by more than the average improvement of OUSD students.
