Mission/Goals: iMentor was founded in 1999 to fight two important problems faced by young people in underserved communities: a scarcity of mentors for youth who want them, and a lack of technological literacy.

Source(s): www.guidestar.org

Notes: iMentor recruits, screens, trains and matches volunteer mentors with students living in New York City neighborhoods, and supports the relationships; designs technology-focused educational projects that allow mentors and mentees to collaborate with one another; trains teachers and staff of youth agencies to become comfortable with technology and to implement the programs; and develops web-based applications that allow other agencies to run their own email mentoring programs.

Type of Evaluation: Pre-Post Test

Objective: To provide a profile of the iMentor student population as well as an overview of program results.

Impact/Outcome Findings: More iMentor participants had an adult they could trust after the program than at the beginning. More students at the end of the program said an adult friend or relative could provide them with information about jobs, careers or getting an education than at the beginning of the program. The majority of participants found their mentor helpful.
