Type of Evaluation: Pre-Post Test; Outcomes Monitoring

Objective: To determine the influence of BASICs on youth outcomes.

Impact/Outcome Findings: BELL scholars outpaced the norm group in the acquisition of skills, and they developed skills they were lacking before the program. BELL scholars improved their self-esteem and kept motivated to learn. Scholars reported higher levels of confidence in their reading and math abilities and had high aspirations for educational attainment. They demonstrated interpersonal skills, self-management skills, and leadership skills. Scholars also demonstrated more age-appropriate social behavior than the comparison group.

The program is free for parents who are eligible for supplemental educational services (SES) under the No Child Left Behind Act. Otherwise, parents pay tuition each semester according to a sliding scale, based on their gross annual income.
