Summary of Available Evaluation Information: The PENCIL Foundation's mission is to link community resources with Nashville public schools to help young people achieve academic success and prepare for life. To monitor PENCIL programs' effectiveness, the Foundation conducts internal outcomes evaluations of their programs, and also relies on data from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program which measures state-wide school achievement. PENCIL Foundation uses educator, student and volunteer evaluations to assess student performance and improvement. Results from 2004 indicate that approximately 84% of educators reported that the benefit of Math Partners to their students was excellent or good, and 73% reported that the tutoring sessions helped increase students' understanding of mathematics. In addition, 79% reported that the program helped students improve their confidence and social skills. All students responded that their understanding of math improved due to program participation. For Reading Partners, 95% of the educators who submitted evaluations regarding their
students who received one-on-one assistance from volunteers reported observing overall improvement in student reading ability. Similarly, 95% of students
reported feeling that their reading had improved as a result of working with Reading Partners.
