Mission/Goals: STARS (Students Taking A Right Stand) helps students refrain from alcohol, other drugs and violence and strives to enhance their educational achievement and character development.

Notes: STARS uses the Student Assistance Program model and offers programs on substance abuse, anger management, parenting, community-based initiatives and character building. STARS partners with the Boys and Girls Clubs and the Scouts programs to offer after school programs. STARS also runs a Strengthening Families after school program for children 6-14 and their parents that emphasizes skill-building.

Type of Evaluation: Outcomes Monitoring

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the STARS programs on youth outcomes.

Impact/Outcomes: The evaluation found that Big Brothers/Big Sisters participants were less likely to start using drugs and alcohol. Participants were less likely to hit someone, they had improved school attendance and performance, improved attitudes toward completing schoolwork, and improved relationships with family and friends. Participants were not more likely to have an improved sense of self-esteem or increased cultural awareness.
