Type of Evaluation: Outcomes Monitoring.

Summary of Available Evaluation Information: Over 95% of OWL students are Latino, and over 80% qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program. In addition to teaching students the core skills of informational technology, OWL staff train and supervise a team of Student Leaders. Student Leaders teach their growing computer skills to their peers and serve as mentors and role models. OWL is offered in computer labs housed within existing schools and community-based organizations. Currently, OWL is offered at four sites, but plans to expand to 10 sites in 2005 and to 20 sites in 2006. OWL (Open World Learning) tracks students' progress using rigorous project-based certification tests of advanced computer skills. Over 90% of OWL students have made significant gains in computer skills. OWL is currently working on an evaluation with an independent consulting group. Preliminary evaluation findings should be available in spring 2005.
