Summary of Available Evaluation Information: KIPP schools are independently run, open enrollment public schools. Students are accepted regardless of prior academic record, conduct, or socioeconomic background. More than 80 percent of KIPP students qualify for the federal free and reduced-price meal program. Each member of the school community signs a 'commitment form' pledging to the quality work and long hours necessary for success. There are two original KIPP Academies in Houston and New York. The New York State Senate has recognized KIPP Academy New York as the highest performing public middle school in the Bronx in reading, math, and attendance each year since the 1997-1998 school year. In 2003, KIPP Academy Houston was named a No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
