stimulate interest in higher education and science careers, by offering
comprehensive environmental education and consistent long-term mentoring.

Outcomes Monitoring. Summary of Available Evaluation Information: ELK's programs include: 1) Denver Youth Naturally (DYN), immersing students in environmental science education through experiential field activities and overnight wilderness experiences with long term mentoring by natural resource professionals; 2) School-based programs; 3) College prep and summer employment programs, offering mentoring and work experience in the field of natural resources; and 4) Learning Environmental Activities for Families (LEAF), involving families of DYN youth in neighborhood service projects and other educational events. ELK (Environmental Learning for Kids) tests participants on their environmental knowledge before and after program completion. In 2004, ELK reported that students showed a 96% improvement in knowledge regarding the functions of a wetland. Students also improved from an initial score of 52% to 90% in their knowledge regarding water quality issues for Colorado environments. Students participating in ELK's Denver Youth Naturally program have a 100% high school graduation rate. A rigorous evaluation of the program has not been conducted. |
