Mission/Goals: The program goal is to provide prevention and intervention services for students at risk of becoming involved in violent and delinquent behaviors by helping them improve school achievement and attendance. It provides students and their families with support and services that would help students improve school performance and social competence such as anger management and conflict resolution. The program brings students, parents, teachers, and school administrators together in order to identify and resolve problems facing youth.

Type of Evaluation: Outcomes Monitoring (Process and outcome evaluation. Pre- and post-intervention data were compared when appropriate).

Objective: To assess the degree to which proposed program activities were carried out, to examine the effectiveness of the program, and to track the progress of program participants.

A program evaluation form was completed by group facilitators to discuss their perception of the program. At the end of the program year, teachers were asked to rate progress of each student by responding to survey questions based on a scale. A focus group with teachers and interviews with a school nurse were also conducted to find out their perceptions of the program and its effects on children. A self-report health survey was collected from children to assess their levels of health care receipt and their health status.

Impact/Outcome Findings: Both boys and girls experienced fewer suspensions in the semester following the participation in the program than in the semester prior to participating in the program. Report card analyses found that the percentage of students with grade A or B increased over time in all subject matters during the year of the program participation while such consistent patterns were not found in the previous year. Teachers, parents and group leaders reported improvements in children's relationships with adults and peers, their behaviors in school and at home, and their skills to cope with anger and aggression, for the large percentage of program participants (60% and higher).
