Mission/Goals: Project Connect aims to remove barriers to education for children and youth experiencing homelessness and keep them connected as a way to break the cycle of homelessness.

Notes: Project Connect receives funding from both the Project Connect Children's Homeless Fund and from the Cincinnati Public Schools.  Project Connect offers multiple services for children and youth, including after school programs and an academic enrichment summer program. It works with existing after-school programs such as the 21st Century Community Learning Centers to guarantee that homeless children receive spots in such programs and are not excluded, and to provide extra program components. Project Connect provides transportation to school and to participate in such programs to all children living within a five mile radius of the school.

Type of Evaluation: Outcomes Monitoring.

Objective: To examine the effects of Project Connect on children participating in the program and determine the effectiveness of the summer program.

Impact/Outcome Findings: Reading scores increased 85% among children in the youngest classroom, 69% among children in the middle classroom, and 65% among children in the older classroom. Based on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the most positive, 90% of parents marked number 5 when asked if field trips provided new experiences for their children. When asked if reading activities helped their children become better readers, 65% marked number 5, and 15% marked number 4. Half of parents marked five when asked if children enjoyed reading more after the program than before they started coming to camp, 15% marked number 4, 20% marked number 3, and 15% marked number 2. When asked if the Positive Choices group helped improve their children's behavior and coping skills at home, 50% marked number 5, 25% marked number 3 and 25% marked number 2. All parents marked number 5 when asked if they would recommend that Project Connect continue to offer the summer program.
