80 children annually Ages 8-14 Please click here for more information on this evaluation.

Type of Evaluation: Quasi-Experimental

Objective: This project was a collaborative effort with the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland to evaluate their after-school program for preadolescent and early adolescent girls.

Impact/Outcomes: No significant differences were found in school attendance, school motivation, perceived academic competence or perceived acceptance by peer between girls who participated in the program and classmates who did not participate. However, girls in the comparison group reported participation in other after-school programs in the community, which may account for the lack of effects of the Project HOPE program. On the other hand observational and focus group data indicated that program girls had good communication and cooperation skills, and felt they had learned to get along better with peers because of the program.
