Note: The following information is based upon a national evaluation of the Mpowerment Project Model, which is a peer-reviewed, research-based HIV prevention education and intervention program targeting young gay, bisexual, and transgender men ages 13-19 years. HIV researchers at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS), University of California, San Francisco developed the Mpowerment Project. The Youth Pride MY LIFE Program is based on the Mpowerment Project Model.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of the Mpowerment Project model.

Impact/Outcomes: The Mpowerment Project has been associated with reduced rates of unprotected anal intercourse among young gay/bisexual men. A second study in Albuquerque, NM showed a slight decrease (minus 12%) in risk behavior while the comparison communities of Phoenix, AZ, and Austin, TX, reported dramatic increases (24% and 42%, respectively). Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) had become widely available prior to the launch of the program in Albuquerque. There is evidence indicating that the rate of unsafe sex among gay/bisexual men is increasing since HAART. Thus, in Albuquerque, the Mpowerment Project appears to have helped prevent the increases in risky behavior among young gay/bisexual men that were occurring in the two comparison communities.
