Non-Marital Births: State Differences

  • In 2009, the percent of all births occurring outside of marriage for women under 30 ranged from 24 percent in Utah to 63 percent in Mississippi (see Table 6).
  • The percent of non-marital births in 2009 was over 60 percent in five states: Mississippi, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Delaware, and New Mexico.
  • Over the past 20 years, every state saw an increase in the percent of all births occurring to unmarried women (see Table 7).
  • The largest increases were seen in the following states: Texas, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
  • The smallest increases were seen in Colorado, New York, Mississippi, and Illinois.
