Non-Marital Births: Overall Trends

  • Among all women in 2009, four in 10 births (41 percent) occurred outside of marriage. This represents a 46 percent increase in the proportion of non-marital births over the past 20 years (see Table 1).
  • In 2009, more than one-half (53 percent) of births to women under the age of 30 occurred outside of marriage. Between 1990 and 2009, the proportion of births to women under 30 increased 56 percent (see Table 2).
