Expanding Time for Learning Both Inside and Outside the Classroom: A Review of the Evidence Base
Based on Child Trends' review of a small, but rigorous, set of evaluations, community schools can be effective in improving a wide range of educational outcomes. This brief review found that some programs have no effects or largely mixed effects that vary by outcome examined, sub-population studied, or study site. However, many of the random assignment studies of community school models were found to be effective in improving educational outcomes such as school attendance, school dropout, and on-time grade promotion. Findings from the CIS whole school model evaluation suggest that programs should implement programs with fidelity to the CIS model in order to achieve the best results.
